1. ICT Position Announcement

The Board of Directors of InnerCity Tennis Foundation announces the opening of its Chief Executive Officer position. InnerCity Tennis Foundation (ICTF) is a Minnesota 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, originally founded in 1952 to help young tennis players with limited means pay for equipment, coaching and access to tournament play.  Full position description and application information.

2. ICT Summer Parks Program 
InnerCity Tennis has partnered with the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Department since the 1970s to bring affordable, quality tennis lessons to the children and youth of Minneapolis.  This summer, the program will operate at 23 different Minneapolis park sites.

3. RSFTC Summer Junior Lessons

Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center offers a comprehensive summer junior program for beginners to advanced players. The summer program is led by four full-time, year-round tennis professionals along with Director Mike Vidmar. The early registration deadline is April 30 to receive a $50 discount for the High Performance Program. More information.

4. Summer Parks Instructors Wanted
InnerCity Tennis & the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board are looking for qualified, enthusiastic individuals to teach tennis and be positive role models for youngsters and teens this summer in the parks.

5. ICT Saturday Winter Program Finale
ICT’s 20 session Saturday Winter Program, free to all participants ages 3-17 is concluding for the season this Saturday, April 13. We are proud to have served over 1,200 kids.

7. Summer Adult In-House Leagues at RSFTC

Twins Ticket Auction Supports Inner City Tennis

Four Tickets for Friday, April 26th vs. the Texas Rangers

We have four Minnesota Twins tickets that we are auctioning off to the highest bidder.  The game is vs. the Texas Rangers at 7:10 pm on Friday, April 26.  The tickets are in the first row behind the Twins dugout and are valued at $92 / each for a total of $368. Deadline and Updates: The auction will end this Friday, March 22 at NOON. No bids after NOON on Friday will be accepted. Place your bid now. Updates will be posted on ourFacebook page at the end of each day. All proceeds from the auction benefit InnerCity Tennis.

1. Executive Director Roger Boyer’s Retirement
Roger Boyer, our Executive Director, has announced his retirement effective January 31. While we will miss Roger’s day-to-day stewardship, he leaves behind an outstanding and lasting legacy that will endure. His leadership, since being named Executive Director in 1998, has been instrumental in ICT’s success, and the Board gratefully acknowledges his service, dedication and contribution to our past growth. He has been a good friend and valued colleague, and we extend our best wishes to him for a fulfilling future. To read the full letter, click here.

2. Four ICT Kids Attend Tennis & Life Camps Winter Retreat
Alex Wahl, Salmaan Mulla, Gabriela Sierra, & Mary Hoang – all participants in our Saturday Winter Program – attended Tennis & Life Camps Winter Retreat at Gustavus Adolphus College over the weekend of January 25-27. It was an amazing weekend where kids learned many life skills as well as improving their tennis games. Check out pictures of the weekend here.

3. Saturday Program Schedule / New Volunteers
The Saturday Program is taking a mini-break for 3 weeks until we start up again on February 23rd.  Programs for our youngest kids start at 3:00pm.  For more details and the full list of dates for our Saturday Program, download the 2012-13 Saturday Program Schedule. We can always use more volunteers!  If you are thinking about getting involved and have questions you can contact Dilcia Pederson. We do trainings for new volunteers at 2:00 on Saturday afternoons.

4. New Outreach Partner – Pillsbury House
ICT’s newest weekly outreach partner is the Pillsbury House, located off 35th & Chicago. ICT provides Kidspeed stations for the K-2 kids at the Pillsbury House and tennis programs at RSFTC for the 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. If you would like to get involved, you can register to volunteer here. This program runs on Friday afternoons at 3:30.

5. Junior Tennis Program at RSFTC
The Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center, the for-profit subsidiary of InnerCity Tennis, offers a full schedule of Junior Tennis for kids ages 3-18 all year long, accommodating both beginners and advanced players. Call 612-825-6844 to register.

6. Volunteer “Practice” Mondays (Winter / Spring Schedule)
All ICT volunteers are invited to take part in our free Monday morning “practices” from 9:00 – 10:30. Improve your tennis game, learn how to work with young kids, and enjoy refreshments afterwards. No need to RSVP – come check it out!  The next session is Monday, February 18th at the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center.

7. Healthy Drink Ideas for Kids Video

1. Saturday Program Schedule
Join us this Saturday as we kick off another season of free programs!  We are operating every Saturday in January: the 5th, 12th, 19th, and 26th.  Programs for our youngest kids start at 3:00pm.  For more details and the full list of dates for our Saturday Program, download the 2012-13 Saturday Program Schedule.

1. ICT Annual Benefit Celebration – Friday, Nov. 9 & Saturday, Nov. 10
Come and celebrate ICT’s past, present and future with a two day celebration on Friday & Saturday, November 9 & 10.  The weekend will start with an Elegant Dinner Gala on Friday, Nov. 9 at International Market Square with special guest and featured speaker the Honorable Sharon Sayles Belton, former Mayor of Minneapolis.  On Saturday, Nov. 10, come out and enjoy Family Tennis Day at the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center and compete in age and skill appropriate tennis and sport challenges in teams with a youngster. World-reknown tennis coach Nick Bollettieri will headline the day, providing a 2 hour clinic, free to anyone who registers for Family Tennis Day.  Register on the official Event Website – come out and support InnerCity Tennis on one or both days!

2. New & Returning Volunteer Training – Tuesday., Sept. 11, 7:30-9pm
If you like working with kids, we want you! Our staff will be leading 3 training sessions on Tuesday, Sept. 11th for new and returning volunteers. Each session will be geared for a different level of coach, based on their tennis experience.  We will cover the basics of our programs as well as new changes to the program for the 2012-13 year.  You can attend all 3 sessions or just the specific session that is of interest to you. Sign up for the training here. 

7:30-8pm - Level I  - Kids ages 3-6  - No tennis experience needed.
8:00-8pm - Level II  - Kids ages 7-11 – Need to know basic tennis fundamentals.
8:30-9pm - Level III & IV – Junior High / High School Kids – 3.5 rated player & be able to feed & rally.

3. Saturday Winter Program Starts Sept. 29
Join us on Sept. 29th to kick off another season of free programming!  This year, programs will be starting later than in the past. Levels I & II will run from 3:00-4:30pm, with Levels III & IV running from 4:30-6:00pm. For more details and the full list of dates, download the official 2012-13 Saturday Program Schedule.

5. Over $13,000 Raised at ICT Clay Benefit Tournament

This year’s tournament achieved a record level of participation with approximately 140 event registrations. Tournament Director Bob Busch and his committee did a marvelous job, grossing over $13,000 for ICT.

All ICT volunteers are invited to take part in our free Monday morning “practices” from 9:00 – 10:30. Improve your tennis game, learn how to work with young kids, and enjoy refreshments afterwards. 7. Healthy Eating – Homemade Rhubarb Ice Cream
This ice cream is cool, refreshing, and not overly sweet. Delicious, and perfect for summer.

8. Value of the Month – Integrity
ICT has identified seven key character assets to nurture and incorporate into the lives of our youngsters for future success: Responsibility, Respect, Teamwork, Enthusiasm, Integrity, Perseverance and Service. Each program that ICT has developed is designed to build one or more of these assets.

Integrity - I will follow the rules…even when no one else is watching.

Inner City Tennis – Calling all Volunteers

If you like working with kids, we need you! Whatever your skill and ability are, we have a fit for you.
Volunteer Training - September 11
Come and learn about volunteering at InnerCity Tennis! We have many opportunities this fall and winter, starting Saturday, September 29th.

Our staff will be leading 3 training sessions on Tuesday, September 11th for new and returning volunteers. Each session will be geared for a different level of coach, based on their tennis experience.  We will cover the basics of our programs as well as new changes to the program for the 2012-13 year.  You can attend all 3 sessions or just the specific session that is of interest to you.

Tuesday, Sept. 11 Volunteer Training Sessions @ Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center
7:30-8:00 – Level I  - Kids ages 3-6  - No tennis experience needed.
8:00-8:30 – Level II  - Kids ages 7-11 – Need to know basic tennis fundamentals.
8:30-9:00 – Level III & IV – Junior High / High School Kids – 3.5 rated player & be able to feed & rally.
Please arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of the session you are attending. Registration will take place in the main lobby at the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center.

1. Saturday Winter Program Finale – April 21
The Saturday winter Program is closing out another wonderful season. We have 2 more dates set for April: 14 & 21.  Don’t miss the finale to a wonderful season of Saturday programming on April 21st!  On this day, we will be serving hot dogs and leomonade to all kids.  Level I & II kids will receive attendance certificates signed by their coaches.  Some selected level III & IV kids will be recognized for exemplifying our Learnings for Leadership values.

2. ICT Summer Parks Tennis Program
This is the 60th consecutive season ICT will partner with the Minneapolis Parks & Recreation Department to deliver tennis programming in the parks.  We will offer programs at 12 South Minneapolis Parks and 3 North Minneapolis Parks. Lessons will run on weekday mornings, beginning on June 18th. Registration Day will be Friday, June 15th at the parks. For specific details, download the schedules below.

3. Summer Instructors Needed
ICT is looking for hard-working individuals to apply for paid summer coaching positions in South Minneapolis. Applicants must be 16 years of age or older, have access to their own transportation and have enthusiasm for working with kids! If interested, apply by Monday, April 30th. 4. Community Statements of Support
The Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center, through the InnerCity Tennis Foundation, operates in Martin Luther King Jr. Park on a lease from the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. The Park Board has asked us to provide statements of community support as they consider renewal of our lease.  Would you kindly write a short statement telling how Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center, (as well as, InnerCity Tennis programming) is important to you and valuable to the surrounding community and the city of Minneapolis. You can help us by emailing your short statement here.

5. Summer Tennis Lessons at RSFTC
In addition to programs ICT offers, the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center, the for-profit subsidiary of ICT, offers paid junior group lessons for younger and beginner players. Take a look at their summer lesson offerings here. Register by calling the tennis center at 612-825-6844.

6. Volunteering at ICT
Don’t have any tennis experience, but want to volunteer? No problem! Our volunteers range in age from teens to seniors and range in ability from never having played tennis to being an advanced, competitive player. If you like working with kids, we can find a fit for you! Opportunities exist on Saturday afternoons and also during the days on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursdays. Email or call Dilcia at 612-824-6099 for more information.

1. Community Open House – Saturday, February 25

InnerCity Tennis and the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center are hosting a Community Open House on Saturday, February 25 from 1:00 – 3:00. Learn how you can get more involved with our programs that promote health and fitness through tennis; we have a lot to offer!  Kids as young as 3 are welcome. We will have games and tennis for everyone, no matter what your age or ability. Don’t have a racquet, no problem! We will furnish racquets to use. Call InnerCity Tennis at 612-824-6099 for more info.

We are on a short break from the Saturday Program until March 3rd. Download the complete schedule here. Our Saturday Program is FREE to all participants ages 3-17. Over 300 kids participate each week – check out group shots for Levels 1, 2, 3 & 4 from last week.

In addition to the free programs ICT offers, the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center, a for-profit subsidiary of ICT, offers paid junior group lessons for younger and beginner players. 8. Tennis Coaching Track – 2012

If you want to teach tennis and are looking for credentials, this is the certification training course you need. Roger Boyer, a United States Professional Teaching Association (USPTA), P1 Tester with 31 years of experience, and Dilcia Pederson, a USPTA, P1 with 4 years experience will lead the course. It will cover all aspects of the USPTA exam: Grips, Stroke Analysis, Stroke Production, Private & Group Lessons, & the Written Exam.  Course information and registration forms are now available online – only 40 people will be accepted for each session. Times TBA.

  • Session #1 – Monday, April 23 – FREE
  • Session #2 – Monday, May 14 – $45
  • Session #3 – Monday, July 23 - $45
  • Session #4 – Thursday, August 30 OR November 1 – FREE

9. Heart Health Month

February is heart health month, a month to celebrate your heart and take steps towards a healthier heart.  Check out one of our corporate sponsors Cub Foods ideas on healthy, economical ideas for meals.
